Wishing you a continuing swift recovery, Beth. I had dental issues - far more minor than yours - and orthodontic work as a young adult and have always been self-conscious about my still slightly crooked front teeth and bridges. So I can relate very much to your experience with the shocked maid. You are admirably stoic indeed, to have coped with such grace with the ongoing challenges.

Thanks, Lizzie. I'm sorry you've had to deal with any of this dental stuff. None of it is "minor", really, because it always involves both function and appearance.

Ugh, I’m very sorry. I didn’t have most of your problems, but I’ve smiled with my mouth shut most of my life. I was especially self-conscious in India, where almost everyone has shining white teeth. I went to the periodontist for the first time last month, and next week I will find out whether or not I will need gum surgery. I have trouble breathing when there is a long procedure — I’ll try to remember meditative breathing, and playing music in my head. I hope your current troubles are your last.

Hi Nancy, sorry to hear you have some problems, but you'll get through it if you have to have surgery. Oddly enough, my teeth look quite good, after some cosmetic work years ago to correct the slight overlap, but when I was young I was quite self-conscious too. Empathy from here, and please write to me if you want to talk about it further!

My wife is in the process of post and crown - two teeth, one a re-do. Local anesthesia only, quick visits. No where near the scope (or probably the quality) of your care. I went to a dentist in Earlville - Emmett Evans. He was quite an accomplished trumpet player, and smiley in what seemed a sadistic way. I’m sure my perception of him had something to do with his willingness to accommodate my parents small budget. Couldn’t numb both sides of my mouth at once, but was happy to drill un-numbed teeth. Two visits for the price of one! So I skipped the whole dentist thing for the next ten years, got a hideous abcess, ( Doc Benedict 👍❤️ sent me to Utica for drainage, saying I needed to be gassed, but upon arrival discovered that there was a glitch in the gassing process that had nearly killed the guy who staggered out right before me. The surgeon, one Herbert Heintz, was rattled of course, and faced with deciding between possibly killing me, letting the infection kill me, or draining the abcess using only Novacaine - which is utterly ineffective in purulent abscesses. Owie! I’ve been fairly conscientious since, and lucky to have had excellent care since- same folks your parents went to I think.

Well that was cathartic - thanks for opening the topic - I love telling that story and it’s even more fun - and way more dramatic - in person. Hang in ❤️

This made me laugh so much, but it's also horrific! I'm sorry you had to go through all these nightmares but thanks for telling us about them so vividly!

Sorry you're dealing with all this, Beth, and I wish you speedy healing. I'm actually reading this while recovering from a gum graft but nothing like all you're having. The older I get and have more (minor) issues to deal with and many of my friends with others, the more kindly I feel towards strangers I encounter with physical challenges. Anyway, thank you for sharing.

Thank, Leslee. I hope your healing goes quickly too. None of it is fun, whether minor or major, and I agree about how these issues help us to be kinder - you never know what someone is dealing with.
